Recruiting Tip: What’s the Appropriate ‘Thank You’?

February 12, 2016

You nailed the interview. Now you need to thank your interviewers for their time, but how should you do this? Send an email? Write a thank you note? We polled our hiring managers to shed some light on this all-important question.

Turns out our more senior hiring managers prefer handwritten notes, even if that means the note doesn’t arrive until a few days after the interview. The note is seen as more thoughtful and will leave a larger impression in their minds.

On the other hand, our more junior hiring managers overwhelmingly prefer email. They believe it’s more efficient and timely, and said they have likely made a hiring decision before they see a candidate’s note.

In short, do what makes you comfortable. There’s no right or wrong answer as long as you send some form of thoughtful, timely acknowledgement. Regardless of what kind of note you choose, remember to draw on something notable from the interview, be genuine, and, of course, keep it professional!
