Look and feel your best at work: Six Quick Tips for Job Seekers

July 14, 2015

Wearing professional clothing in the summer isn’t the easiest thing when it’s insanely hot outside and you’re commuting in the morning and after hours. Dressing to impress can be tricky, but we have a few tips to help you show off the best version of yourself.

  1. Invest in a comfortable, versatile pair of shoes.
Not only will this save your feet during long days on the job, but a versatile pair of shoes will help pull together your entire outfit and serve you well for interviews, internships, and other jobs in the future. Ladies, if you’re using public transportation, consider packing your heels and commuting in more comfortable shoes like flats. No matter what you do, break these guys in before your first day of work. Trust us. And men, don’t forget that dress shoes tend to look better with dress socks.
  2. Leave a sweater or blazer at your desk.
It’s reality: Most office buildings go overboard with air conditioning in the summer. Leave a sweater or blazer at your desk just in case it becomes too frigid; plus, a blazer will come in handy if you’re unexpectedly pulled into a last minute meeting with senior staff.
  3. Be prepared for the unexpected.
Blisters tend to strike before a presentation, your lunch makes its way onto your shirt before a meeting, and you end up running into the organization’s president in the elevator and he asks for a copy your résumé. It never hurts to be prepared! Keep a blister stick, mints, stain removing pen, Band-Aids, and business cards on hand, and have a digital copy of your résumé at your disposal. You never know when you’ll be able to avoid having to ask a colleague for a favor with just a quick trip to your desk.
  4. Pay attention to the office dress code.
It sounds like a no-brainer, but give close consideration to the provided office dress code and connect with your supervisors with any questions. Remember, ladies, you can be fashionable without showing a lot of skin!
  5. Invest in wrinkle release spray.
For the most professional look and to avoid looking rumpled, use wrinkle release spray, an iron, a steamer, or even a hair straightener to touch things up before leaving for the day.
  6. Act confident.
But not overly confident. No one wants to be the “arrogant new person,” so dress the part, work hard, and show off your skills. You were hired for a reason!
